Sports Nutrition

Do you want to know how to feed to improve your sports performance? I tell you, Carlos Hidalgo, a sports enthusiast who has experienced firsthand how good nutrition makes a difference. Throughout my years in sports, I have learned that sports nutrition is much more than following a diet. It is a true cornerstone of any effective training plan.

What is Sports Nutrition?

Sports nutrition is a branch of nutrition that focuses on improving athletic performance. This is achieved through the correct intake of macronutrients (proteins, carbohydrates and fats) and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals), tailored to the specific needs of each sport and each individual.

Macronutrients: The Athlete's Fuel

When we talk about sports nutrition, it is inevitable to get into macronutrients, as they are the energy base. Let me explain how each one works:

  1. Carbohydrates: They are the "quick fuel" for the body and fundamental in high-intensity sports. Complex carbohydrates, such as those found in legumes and whole grains, release sustained energy,
  2. Proteins: The key to recovery and muscle growth. Finding them in foods such as lean meats, fish, eggs and legumes ensures that your muscle mass stays strong and recovered after each workout.
  3. Fats: The energy source for longer efforts and help maintain vital functions, so don't be afraid of them. Mind you, prioritize unsaturated fats, such as those in avocado and olive oil, as they promote cardiovascular health.

Micronutrients: Small Details with Big Impact

Micronutrients, although necessary in smaller quantities, have a huge impact on performance and recovery:

    • Calcium and vitamin D: Essential for strong>strong bones and proper muscle contraction.
    • Iron: Vital for oxygen transport. Without sufficient iron, the body will fatigue faster, especially in endurance sports.
    • Vitamins B and C: These vitamins help transform carbohydrates into energy and are antioxidants, which helps reduce muscle damage.

    Hydration: The Nutrition You Drink

In any sports nutrition regimen, the issue of hydration cannot be forgotten. Mild dehydration can reduce performance by as much as 12%, because it affects the body's ability to regulate its temperature and maintain electrolyte balance.

    Ergogenic Aids and Supplementation

This is where the topic of sports supplements comes in, which can be a great help if used well. Among the most popular supplements is creatine, which has been shown to improve strength and power in certain types of training.

    Conclusion

Sports nutrition is not just about eating healthy, but eating strategically for each type of physical exertion. From the selection of macronutrients to the use of appropriate supplements, each component of this diet influences your performance.
