Imagine you describe an incredibly detailed scene to a computer, and it turns it into an image. Yes, I'm talking about artificial intelligence (AI) generated images. If you're reading this, you've probably already been struck by this disruptive technology. But what are these images really and how do they work? Get ready to find out!
I'm Rubén Águila, and I'll tell you from my experience with tools that seem straight out of science fiction, but today are as real as the coffee I'm drinking as I write.
Artificial intelligence images are visual creations generated by algorithms designed to interpret data, such as text or reference images, and convert them into entirely new visual content. These tools use advanced models such as neural networks or deep learning algorithms.
Examples? DALL-E 2, MidJourney or Stable Diffusion, which take your words and turn them into visual art. It's like having a digital artist who never sleeps or complains about bad weather.
Behind these images is the so-called Generative AI, which learns from thousands of previous examples (photographs, paintings, illustrations, etc.) to understand how a futuristic car should look in a post-apocalyptic landscape or a dog with glasses drinking coffee.
Here are the most popular tools and what makes them unique:
Other interesting tools are Canva AI and NightCafe, which combine editing and image generation with an intuitive approach for less technical users.
I confess that my first contact with DALL-E was like dropping a puzzle on a genius. I asked for something simple: "A robot taking a nap under a tree" and boom! The image appeared in seconds. The amazing thing was that not only was it consistent, but it had details I had never mentioned before, like a touch of perfect shadow or an open book next to the robot.
Advantages:
Disadvantages:
Generative AI is already transforming sectors such as advertising, film, video games and even medicine. In the future, we will see even more advanced tools that will combine text, audio and video models to create complete multisensory experiences.
Is AI a threat to traditional artists? I don't think so. Rather, it is a new tool to expand human creativity. As I like to say, "You don't have to fear technology, but learn to tame it."
And you, have you tried any of these tools yet? If you haven't, maybe today is the day to enter the fascinating world of AI-generated images.
