Cybersafe: My Cybersecurity Journey and How to Protect Yourself in the Digital World

Hello! I'm Rubén Águila, and today I want to talk to you about a topic that I'm passionate about and that, in these times, is more relevant than ever: cybersecurity. Yes, I know it sounds like a technical word, but I promise you that, after reading this article, you will see it with different eyes. And, who knows, maybe you'll even be encouraged to become a true cybersecurity.

What is being cybersecure?

Before we get into the subject, let's clarify concepts. Being "cybersecure" means being protected in the vast and sometimes dangerous digital world. It means taking steps to make sure your data, your privacy and your identity are safe from cybercriminals and online threats. In short, it's like having an invisible shield that protects you as you surf the internet.

My first encounter with cybersecurity

Let me tell you an anecdote. It was 2005, and I was a young technology enthusiast. One day, I received an email from a supposed Nigerian prince offering me a fortune in exchange for my help in transferring money. Unclever me, I was about to fall for it. Luckily, a more savvy friend warned me in time. That was my baptism into the world of online scams and the starting point of my interest in cybersecurity.

The evolution of digital threats

Since then, threats in cyberspace have evolved by leaps and bounds. It's no longer just fraudulent emails; we now face sophisticated malware, ransomware that hijacks our files, phishing that attempts to steal our credentials and a host of ruses designed to trick us.

According to recent data, in Spain, the National Institute of Cybersecurity (Incibe) recorded more than 83,000 such incidents in 2023, up 24% from the previous year. And it is expected to reach close to 100,000 queries in 2024 ... Today, one in five crimes ... In 2025, it will be one ...

How to protect ourselves in this hostile environment?

The key is prevention and education. Here are some tips based on my experience:

    • Strong passwords: Forget about using "123456" or "password". Create complex passwords, mix letters, numbers and symbols. And, please, don't use the same one for everything.
    • Update your devices: Updates are not a whim of companies; they usually fix vulnerabilities. Keep your operating system and applications up to date.
    • Distrust the unknown: Don't open emails from suspicious senders, don't click on dubious links and don't download files from untrusted sources.
    • Use two-step authentication: Add an extra layer of security to your accounts. Even if someone gets your password, they will need a second factor to access.
    • Educate your environment: Cybersecurity is everyone's responsibility. Share these tips with your family and friends.

    Initiatives that promote cybersecurity

Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to collaborate with various organizations that seek to raise awareness of the importance of cybersecurity. For example, in Argentina, there is an organization called Argentina Cibersegura, dedicated to creating a safe digital space and raising awareness about the responsible use of the Internet and technology in schools, institutions, companies and interest groups.

In Panama, the national cybersecurity campaign "Panama Cibersegura" is an initiative focused on providing Panamanian citizens with primary information regarding the care of their digital identity.

In Spain, the Chamber of Commerce has launched the "Pyme Cibersegura" program, which offers needs analysis and recommendations to improve cybersecurity in small and medium-sized companies.

    The importance of continuous training

Technology is advancing at breakneck speed, and with it, the tactics of cybercriminals. That is why it is essential to keep up to date. There are online courses, webinars and workshops to help you stay up to date on cybersecurity best practices.

    My personal experience: lessons learned

Over the years, I have made mistakes and learned from them. I remember one occasion when I carelessly failed to update critical software on my computer. That little slip-up allowed in a malware that encrypted all my files. It was a hard lesson, but it taught me the importance of not letting my guard down.

    Cybersecurity in business

If you have a business, large or small, cybersecurity should be a priority. Attacks on businesses can have devastating consequences, from financial losses to reputational damage.

In this regard, companies like Cibersegura offer tailored solutions to prevent attacks and protect companies' most valuable data. Their team of cybersecurity experts is here to provide you with the peace of mind and protection you need.
