Educa UNIVERSITY|SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING
I'll be honest, if Barcelona is already a fascinating city, the Museum of Science, known as CosmoCaixa, is the icing on the cake that leaves you with your mouth open. My name is Pablo García, and I'm going to tell you why this place is, literally, a journey through time, space and science. Why? Because throughout my life I've had the luxury of visiting science museums halfway around the world, and believe me, this is a gem that you have to experience for yourself.
So, make yourself comfortable, because I'm going to take you on a complete tour that encompasses more than 30,000 square meters of science, history and pure wonder.
For those who don't know it yet, the CosmoCaixa Barcelona is not your typical boring museum where you walk around looking at things behind glass. No, here the interactivity and sensory experience are the protagonists. Since opening its doors in 2004, after an impressive renovation of the old modernist building designed by Josep Domènech i Estapà, this museum has become one of the most outstanding in all of Europe.
Imagine a building where modernist architecture is combined with a modern extension that houses permanent and temporary exhibitions. Activities for children, families and adults are held here that really make you think. Because yes, at CosmoCaixa you don't just learn, you also have a lot of fun.
One of my favorite spaces is the Universe Room. It's as if you were getting on a ship and traveling from the Big Bang to the present day. Here they not only tell you about the creation of the cosmos, but immerse you in a visual and sensory journey that encompasses the evolution of species, human biology and the fascinating world of the brain.
I'll tell you something: it's brutal. The interactive displays, 3D animations and hands-on experiments make you feel like a real scientist. Plus, the recent remodeling of this room in 2019 has further enhanced the experience, making it even more immersive and educational.
And if you thought science was just a laboratory thing, you're wrong! In CosmoCaixa there is a section called the Flooded Forest that recreates nothing less than an Amazon ecosystem. Imagine walking through a 1,000-square-meter greenhouse filled with tropical plants, fish, piranhas and even crocodiles. Yes, crocodiles in the middle of Barcelona!
The first time I saw it, I was speechless. This space is not only a visual delight, but it makes you reflect on the importance of ecosystems and biodiversity. And for the kids, it's an adventure they won't forget.
Now, if you're passionate about space, you can't miss the Planetarium. Here you not only observe stars, but you are immersed in a visual spectacle that leaves you with your eyes wide open. The Creativity workshops, where kids and adults can test their creativity while learning about technology and science, are another must at the museum.
Seriously, whether you come with kids or just want to feed your scientific curiosity, CosmoCaixa has activities and exhibits for all ages. I've come with friends, with my family, and we always find something new to explore.
Let's talk a bit about the building, because it deserves its own chapter. Originally built as an asylum for the blind in 1904, it was remodeled to become an interactive museum in 1981, and finally, in 2004, it was transformed into the spectacular CosmoCaixa we know today.
The best thing about this place is how they have managed to respect its Modernist architecture, integrating it with a modern extension that includes a floating glass cube and a science plaza outdoors. All of this is part of the "Green Building" project, focused on sustainability and energy efficiency.
I could go on telling you a thousand things about this museum, but here I summarize why you should visit:
Before I say goodbye, here are some useful tips based on my experience:
If you're in Barcelona or plan to visit, the CosmoCaixa Science Museum is a must-see. Whether you are passionate about science or just want to spend a different day, this place will leave you speechless. I tell you, Pablo García, that I've been to science museums all over the world and I have yet to find one as complete as this one.
