Hello! I'm Rubén Águila, and today I want to talk to you about a subject that I am passionate about and to which I have dedicated a large part of my life: teacher training. Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to experience firsthand the transformations and challenges facing education in Spain. So, sit back, let's dive into this fascinating world.
Teacher training is the process by which teachers acquire and update the necessary skills to perform their educational work effectively. This process is divided into two major stages:
Initial Training: This is the preparation that a person receives before beginning his or her teaching career. It includes pedagogical and didactic knowledge and, of course, mastery of the subject he/she will teach.
Ongoing Training: Once in practice, teachers must continue training to adapt to social, technological and pedagogical changes. Education is a constantly evolving field, and teachers must keep up to date in order to offer quality teaching.
Let me tell you a little about my journey. I started my educational journey in a small rural school in Andalusia. There, I understood the importance of a solid initial training, but I also realized that learning does not end when you get a university degree. The reality of the classroom confronts you with situations for which, sometimes, you are not prepared, and that is where continuing education plays a crucial role.
In our country, initial teacher training varies according to the educational level they are targeting:
Childhood and Primary Education: A Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood or Primary Education is required, respectively. These university programs are designed to provide a solid foundation in pedagogy and didactics, adapted to the needs of the youngest students.
Secondary and Baccalaureate Education: In addition to a university degree in the corresponding specialty, it is essential to take the Master's Degree in Teacher Training for Compulsory Secondary and Baccalaureate Education, Vocational Training and Language Teaching. This master's degree provides the pedagogical and didactic tools necessary to face secondary school classrooms.
Lifelong learning is essential for teachers to keep up to date and be able to respond to the demands of an ever-changing society. Educational administrations, in collaboration with universities and other institutions, offer a wide range of courses and training activities. These initiatives range from updating pedagogical methodologies to the integration of new technologies in the classroom.
Throughout my career, I have identified several challenges in teacher training:
Adapting to New Technologies: Digitalization has transformed education. Teachers must be prepared to integrate digital tools into their daily practice, which requires specific and updated training.
Attention to Diversity: Classrooms are increasingly heterogeneous. It is essential for teachers to have strategies to cater to students with different needs and learning styles.
Training in Key Competencies: Current education is not only focused on the transmission of knowledge, but also on the development of competencies such as critical thinking, creativity and collaboration. Teachers must be trained to foster these skills in their students.
Teacher training is a fundamental pillar to ensure quality education. As teachers, we have the responsibility to keep ourselves in constant learning, adapting to changes and always seeking the best for our students. From my experience, I can affirm that investing in training not only enriches our teaching practice, but also allows us to grow as professionals and as people.
The faculties embrace diverse academic disciplines and fields of study, opening doors to new perspectives and exploring different spheres of wisdom in a constantly evolving world.
