Women in Science: A View from Experience

Women in Science: A View from Experience

Hello, dear reader! I am Carlos Hidalgo, and today I want to talk to you about a topic that I am passionate about and with which I have had the privilege of living throughout my career: women in science. Over the years, I have witnessed how brilliant women have defied stereotypes and left an indelible mark on the scientific world.

Breaking Barriers: A Personal Journey

Let me take you by the hand through some memories. I remember Maria, a fellow biologist who, with her tenacity, made significant advances in genetic research. Or Laura, a physicist who, against all odds, became a reference in her field. These women not only contributed knowledge, but also opened doors for future generations.

Initiatives that Inspire

In recent years, I have seen wonderful initiatives emerge that seek to encourage female participation in science. For example, in Almassora, an exhibition entitled "We girls are warriors... and also engineers (and scientists, technologists, mathematicians...)" was inaugurated, focused on encouraging female students' interest in science and technology careers. This exhibition highlights the contribution of women to these fields and seeks to remove obstacles that female students may face when choosing their professions.

In addition, events such as "Science and Technology in Women" have been held with the aim of inspiring new scientific and technological vocations among women. In one of these events, outstanding professionals such as Pilar Gayán, Esther Borao, Gloria Cuenca and Patricia Heredia participated, sharing their experiences with students, showing that the scientific path is also for them.

Stories that Mark

I cannot fail to mention Natalia Henríquez, a Chilean Air Force pilot, who became the first Chilean female pilot to land at the South Pole on January 3, 2025. Her achievement is not only a milestone in aviation, but also an inspiration for many women who dream of conquering new horizons.

The Road Ahead

Despite progress, there is still much to be done. Women in science continue to face challenges, from pay gaps to lack of representation in leadership positions. It is critical that we continue to support and promote gender equality in all scientific fields.

Conclusion

From my experience, I can state with certainty that science is enriched by diversity. Women have demonstrated, time and again, that their contribution is invaluable. It is everyone's responsibility to create an environment where they can fully develop and continue to illuminate the path of knowledge.
