I'm going to be very clear from the start: artificial intelligence (AI) is not the future, it's the present. And if you're not in this boat yet, it's time for you to get on board. My name is Rubén Águila, and due to life, I've had to learn and work with AI more than I imagined a few years ago. Today I'm going to tell you all about artificial intelligence courses, why you should consider them, how to choose the best one and, above all, I'm going to share with you a bit of my personal experience.
In simple terms, an artificial intelligence course is a training that teaches you how systems that mimic human intelligence work. Those systems are able to learn, reason, solve problems, understand language and even make decisions without direct human intervention. Not bad, right!
Now, an AI course can cover topics as varied as machine learning, neural networks, deep learning, natural language processing (NLP) and computer vision. And yes, I know, it sounds like a lot of technicalities, but relax! Here's something for all levels.
First, I'll tell you straight: the world is moving at a scary pace, and AI is the locomotive. If your goal is to stay relevant in any industry, you need to, at the very least, understand what it's all about.
I dove into the world of AI for two reasons:
Curiosity: I've always been one of those who can't be left without understanding how something works. And when I saw that the job market was demanding more and more AI-related skills, I said to myself, "Ruben, either get on the train or watch it go."
Labor demand: Seriously, companies are desperately looking for professionals who know how to handle, understand and apply artificial intelligence. And here among us, these profiles are not around the corner.
The landscape of artificial intelligence courses is amplest, and varies depending on what you need to learn and your level of prior knowledge. I've tried several of these courses over the years, and I'll give you my honest opinion of some that I consider essential.
AI for Everyone - IBM (edX)
If you're just starting out, IBM has a gem called "AI for Everyone". In this free course, they teach you the basics of AI in super simple terms. You're going to understand what artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning and neural networks are without going crazy. And believe me, this kind of knowledge opens many doors.
Introduction to Generative AI (Coursera)
Does ChatGPT sound familiar? Then this course is for you. You'll learn how generative models work, those that create images, text, music, and more! It's a three-week course, short but concise, perfect if you're interested in generative AI and want to keep up with the latest technologies.
Machine Learning with Python - MIT (edX)
If you already have a solid foundation and want to delve deeper into machine learning, this course is pure gold. Be careful, it is more advanced, and has a duration of 15 weeks. You will need to invest a lot of time, but if you are really interested in understanding machine learning in depth, there is no better option.
AI Chatbots without Programming - IBM (edX)
Are you interested in creating your own chatbots? This course is brutal, and the best thing is that you don't need to know how to program. It teaches you how to deploy chatbots and use them for different purposes, something that is in incredible demand in the business world today(
Here's a tip from someone who has been through this: don't go crazy choosing a course. Think about your goal first.
I'm going to be honest with you. When I started with this, I had no idea what an "algorithm" was, let alone something as complicated as deep learning. But online courses saved my life.
I started with introductory courses, such as the IBM one, and then I moved up a level. Today, after a few years in the field, I can say that these courses changed my professional life. I have worked with chatbots, neural networks and other systems that, frankly, five years ago would have seemed to me to be from another planet.
And best of all, these courses don't require you to be a computer genius. If you can put in some time and effort, you can learn anything. Believe me, what AI can do is impressive, but what's more impressive is what you can accomplish with it if you take the time to learn.
Artificial intelligence courses are the key to a world full of opportunities. Whether you want to turn your career around, or you simply like to stay on top of the latest technologies, there's a course for you.
So don't wait around, start today. I promise you that in a few years you will be grateful you took this step. And if I, Ruben Aguila, was able to learn from scratch, you can too.
