Hi, I'm Ruben Aguila. SEO. I'm sure you've heard those three letters a million times. And maybe they sound like technical gibberish, reserved only for computer nerds or digital marketing gurus. But nothing could be further from the truth.
Let me tell you something: if you've ever had a website or tried to get noticed online, you know what I'm talking about. SEO is not just a concept; it's a necessity, a battlefield where everyone fights for a single goal: visibility.
I got into this world by pure chance. I started with a blog back in 2008, and I thought that writing excellent content was enough. Wrong. That's when I discovered that it doesn't matter if you have the best content in the world, if Google doesn't see you, no one else will see you either.
So, if you're reading this, you're probably wondering, "What does SEO really mean?". Well, hold on because here I explain everything.
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, which translated into Christian is Search Engine Optimization. But what the heck does this mean
It's simple: SEO is all those techniques and strategies you use to make Google and other search engines love your website. It's like learning to speak their language so that when someone searches for something related to what you offer, you're the first option that comes up.
In other words, it's about getting Google to put you on their VIP list on the first page of results. If you're not there, you don't exist. Because, let's be honest, how many times do you click on the second page of results? Exactly, almost never.
I'll sum it up for you in two words: free traffic. Or better yet, organic traffic. When someone searches for something and finds your page among the first results, boom! You have a visitor without having paid a single penny in advertising.
But beware, this is not black magic, nor something that happens overnight. It takes work, strategy and, above all, understanding how Google's algorithms work.
There are three major pillars of SEO that you should know: on-page SEO (on-page SEO), off-page SEO (off-page SEO), and technical SEO.
SEO On-Page: Optimizing Inside Your Site
Here we talk about what you do inside your website so that Google understands and values it. Things like choosing the right keywords, using title and subtitle tags, writing quality content, optimizing images, and a long etcetera.
An expert trick? Make your content as digestible as possible. Google loves content that clearly answers users' questions. Use clear language, short paragraphs, subheadings (H1, H2, H3) and make sure each page of your site is optimized for a specific keyword.
SEO Off-Page: The Power of Backlinks
Here comes in everything that happens outside your website. Search engines consider that if other websites link to you, it's because what you offer is valuable. So, getting quality links (backlinks) is vital.
Don't get confused, it's not about having thousands of links, it's about having links from relevant and authoritative sites. Google rewards quality, not quantity.
How do you get these links? Strategies like guest blogging, link building, or even something called broken link building (I assure you this is another world).
Technical SEO: The Health of Your Website
All the SEO in the world is useless if your website is not technically sound. This means your site must be fast, secure, and easy to navigate. Google values user experience. And if your site is a mess or takes a thousand years to load, forget about ranking high.
We're talking about things like having an SSL certificate, optimizing loading speed, and making sure your site is compatible with mobile devices (because, surprise surprise, Google now indexes mobile versions of sites first).
Now that you're clear on what SEO is, let's get down to business. Here are some strategies I've learned through trial and error:
Do Brutal Keyword Research: It's not just about knowing what words your potential customers use; it's about finding the ones that have a good balance between search volume and competition. Tools like SEMrush or Ahrefs are essential here. Think like your customer, not like an expert!
Create Valuable Content, and Do It Regularly: Publishing one post a year will get you nowhere. Google loves fresh, up-to-date content. The key? Answer questions, give solutions, tell stories. Make people want to stay on your page.
Optimize Your Content For Google and Your Users: Use your keywords naturally, in titles, subtitles, meta descriptions, and alt text of images. But don't fall into the trap of keyword stuffing. Google notices, and will penalize you.
Build Authority With Quality Backlinks: Collaborate with other sites, create content that is so good that others will want to link to it. And use link building tactics, such as writing on other blogs, or even finding broken links on relevant sites and suggesting yours as a replacement.
Monitor, Analyze and Adjust: SEO is an ongoing process. Use tools like Google Analytics and Search Console to know what is working and what is not. Adjust your strategies according to the results.
If there is one thing I have learned, it is that SEO is a constantly changing world. Google adjusts its algorithm more than 500 times a year. So, if you want to stay on top, you have to stay current.
Some say that artificial intelligence, such as Chatbots and Voice Search, will be the future of SEO. I say that the future of SEO is to adapt, constantly learn, and never take anything for granted
S SEO may not be something you see at a glance, but trust me, it's the heart of digital marketing. It's what will allow you to have visibility and, therefore, opportunities in an increasingly digital world.
So, if you're just starting out in the world of SEO, I recommend you get your hands dirty, try different strategies, and never stop learning. Because in this game, whoever stops moving, loses.
