Hello, I'm Pablo García, and let me tell you that there is no place in the world like the Museum of Arts and Sciences of Valencia. I'm not just speaking to you from the enthusiasm of someone who has visited it a couple of times; I'm speaking as someone who has explored every corner of this futuristic complex and knows every nook and cranny. Over the years, I have seen how each of its white and glass sculpted structures rises, as if stepping out of a science fiction dream. If you are one of those who enjoy science really, and even more so if you are passionate about culture, here is what you need to know about this marvel in Valencia.
The City of Arts and Sciences is a cultural and scientific complex designed by renowned architect Santiago Calatrava and Félix Candela. In its more than 350,000 square meters it houses six incredible buildings: the Hemisfèric, the Museu de les Ciències, the Umbracle, the Oceanogràfic, the Ágora, and the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía. Its purpose? To make you experience science in a way you never imagined before. And here's the key detail: it's not the typical museum where you look at everything from afar and you're left with the desire to touch.... Here you have permission to interact, experiment, and even feel like a scientist for a day!
The Hemisfèric is the building that looks like a giant eye, like a human eye open to the sky. It draws you into a high-tech cinematic experience with its concave IMAX screen, where the viewer is literally part of the movie. From films about space, nature, to short films about science, it's the place where you learn while being amazed.
Have you ever visited a museum where you not only can, but have to touch? Well, that's the motto of the Museu de les Ciències: "It's forbidden not to touch". This museum turns any visitor into a scientist for a day, offering you the chance to immerse yourself in subjects ranging from physics to biology, ecology and medicine. The exhibitions are constantly renewed, but one of the ones I enjoy the most is the one that explains how everyday inventions work and others that seem to be taken out of a science fiction movie.
Can you imagine walking underwater? Well, the Oceanogràfic allows you to do so, and no, it's not just an aquarium. We're talking about more than 110,000 square meters, designed to make you feel as if you were traveling through different oceans and seas of the planet. Here you will find sharks, dolphins, and even the exotic sunfish. And if you are one of those who enjoy learning while admiring, the dolphin shows are on another level, showing the intelligence of these animals in a controlled and educational environment.
This is where the great opera and other musical performances are held. And although my heart is in science, the architecture of this place is so impressive that it deserves a special mention. If you're a music lover or simply a lover of futuristic architecture, the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia is where you should be.
The Umbracle is a hanging garden of Mediterranean plants and contemporary sculptures, ideal for a walk under the Valencia sky. At nightfall, the place becomes a terrace where you can relax and enjoy a drink in the "Terraza Mya", a social space ideal for enjoying the atmosphere of this magical area. The Agora, meanwhile, hosts large-scale events, such as art exhibitions, scientific conferences and more, in a space that seems designed for an encounter between the human mind and science.
Finally, the L'Assut d'Or Bridge gives you a panoramic view of the entire complex and is perfect for capturing that iconic photo of your visit. This architectural work is not just a walkway between banks; it symbolizes the union between art, science and the urban landscape of Valencia.
All in all, do you realize what a marvel the Museum of Arts and Sciences is? It is a jewel of scientific dissemination, a place where you can explore, discover and even wonder no matter your age.
You know, if you ever pass through Valencia, book one or two full days for this museum because believe me, you're going to need it.
