Educa UNIVERSITY|JOBS & PROFESSIONS
I'm going to tell you about my personal experience with Mercadona. For several years of my life, I had the opportunity to work in this supermarket chain, and let me tell you, there are many things that are not seen at first glance when we think of a job there. I'm going to tell you the good, the bad and, above all, the real that this work experience can be.
Mercadona is one of the largest supermarket chains in Spain, with more than 1,600 stores and a workforce that exceeds 99,000 people. And it is not just another supermarket; it is a company with a labor policy that is quite clear and different from that of many companies in the sector. For example, it offers jobs with attractive salaries and job stability that is not easy to find these days.
When I decided to look for a job at Mercadona, it wasn't that complicated. The first thing you should know is that Mercadona has its own job portal. Here, you can filter offers according to province, municipality and the type of contract you prefer. There are full-time and also part-time offers, ideal for those who can't work so many hours.
What most caught my attention is that the requirements are not very high for most positions. Generally, they ask to have ESO (Compulsory Secondary Education) as a minimum requirement. But if you're looking for something more specialized, such as a technical position, you may need a little more training.
If there's one thing that grabs you from the start at Mercadona, it's the salary. By 2024, the base salary for employees at Mercadona starting from 1,507 euros a month. However, over time, depending on seniority, it can reach 2,162 euros per month after a few years. And watch out! This salary is in 14 payments, which allows you a better distribution of your income throughout the year.
When I entered, of course, I started in the lowest bracket, but after three years I was already earning around €1,900 a month. So if you're looking for financial stability, working at Mercadona can be a more than interesting option.
I'm going to be honest with you, not everything is perfect. But Mercadona offers conditions that are hard to find elsewhere, especially in the retail sector.
Not everything is rosy, of course. As with any job, there are complicated moments. Store work can be exhausting, especially at peak times, but one of the plus points is that you're always looking for a well-distributed team. You work in shifts, which allows you to have some flexibility with schedules, although that depends a lot on the store you are in.
Another thing I noticed is that Mercadona is very strict with their internal policies. They have a very customer-oriented approach, which is great, but can also be stressful at times. It's something to keep in mind if you decide to apply.
One of the things that motivated me to continue working there was the opportunity to move up. I started as a stocker and after a few years I was able to move up to section manager. This, in addition to a salary increase, gave me the opportunity to have more responsibilities and learn how to manage equipment. Mercadona really goes for internal promotion, so if you work hard, the opportunities to grow are there.
If you're looking for a job with good salary, stability and opportunities to grow, Mercadona can be a solid option. However, you must be willing to adapt to a intense and highly structured work environment. I'm not going to lie to you, there are days when you end up exhausted, but the benefits offered by the company make up for that effort.
Working at Mercadona allowed me to have an economic stability that you hardly find in other companies in the sector. If you are considering applying for a job here, my recommendation is to apply without fear, especially if you value the possibility of professional growth and the fact that your efforts will be rewarded with a good salary.
