Public Employment JCYL: What you need to know to secure your job vacancy

Throughout my career, public employment in the Junta de Castilla y León (JCYL) has been a constant in my professional life. From my first steps as an applicant, to having seen firsthand how the competitive examination system works, I can assure you one thing: preparing for a position is a long journey, but with the right information, it can be much easier than it seems.

What is public employment in the JCYL?

For those who are not yet familiar, public employment in the Junta de Castilla y León refers to the job vacancies that are offered through competitive examinations to fill different positions in the Administration. Each year, the Junta publishes its Oferta de Empleo Público (OPE) with the number of positions available in various sectors: education, health, administration and many more.

This 2023, the OPE of the JCYL has offered almost 3,000 positions (exactly 2,970!). Of these, more than 2,600 are destined for new entry and free shift, which means that there is an increase of more than 9% compared to previous years.

Types of public employment in the JCYL

There are two main ways to get a place in the JCYL:

  1. Free shift: This is the most common access for any citizen. Here you compete on equal terms with other opponents.
  2. Internal promotion: This type of access is reserved for civil servants who already work in the administration and seek promotion to a higher category. In the OPE 2023, 294 places have been reserved for internal promotion((.

In addition, 10% of the places are reserved for people with disabilities, ensuring equal opportunities for this group.

My experience with public employment in Castilla y León

Since I was young, I have always seen public employment as a secure and stable option. I started my journey in this world as a competitive examiner and I have faced the most complicated tests. The key? It is not enough to study; you need strategy and perseverance. There are days that seem endless, but in the end, getting a position compensates the effort.

In the field of the Council of Education, I have seen how many colleagues fought for their position. The public employment positions of the JCYL cover a wide variety of areas, from teaching to administrative. The same happens in other departments, such as health or general administration, where the competitive examinations are just as demanding.

What do you need to apply for the JCYL?

  • Basic requirements: Generally, you need to be of legal age, have Spanish nationality or that of an EU member country, and have the qualifications required for the position to which you aspire.
  • Documentation: It is essential to be attentive to the deadlines and submit all documentation correctly: ID, titles, and certificates required by the call.
  • Preparation: In addition to studying the specific agenda of each competition, I recommend doing mock exams. It will help you gain speed and confidence.

Advantages of getting a place in the JCYL

Why do so many people choose to sit for competitive examinations in the JCYL? Simple. Because it guarantees a stability that few jobs offer today:

  • Fixed employment: Once you get your place, you don't have to worry about losing your job.
  • Competitive salary: Public employees of the JCYL receive a competitive salary, with salaries that vary according to the position, but are usually above average.
  • Job conciliation: This is one of the great advantages of public employment. The schedules are usually fixed, which makes it easier to reconcile personal and professional life.

How to prepare for public employment JCYL in 2023

Now, more than ever, oppositions are in high demand. More and more people see public employment as the solution to job instability. So if you are thinking of taking competitive examinations, here are some key tips:

  1. Choose your competition well: There are competitions for all types of profiles. From administrative, auxiliary to technical in various areas. The first thing is to decide which one best suits your profile.
  2. Plan your time: Don't leave studying to the last minute. Plan your weeks and days of study so that you cover the entire syllabus.
  3. Support yourself in academies and online resources: Nowadays, there are many academies that prepare for competitive exams. If you prefer to study on your own, on the internet there are also many free and paid resources(((.

As someone who has been in your shoes, I say yes. But it's not an easy road. You need a lot of determination, good organization and, above all, patience. The JCYL public employment offers a unique opportunity for those seeking job stability and the satisfaction of working for the community.

In short, if you are willing to put in the necessary effort, the rewards can be immense. Just be mentally prepared for a long process. As a good friend of mine, who has been a civil servant for more than 20 years, says: "With perseverance and hard work, the position arrives."
