Promoting Physical Health in the Workplace: A Journey Through Experience

Promoting Physical Health in the Workplace: A Journey Through Experience

I am Carlos Hidalgo, and I want to talk to you about something I am passionate about because I have experienced it firsthand and have seen its positive impact: the promotion of physical health at work. This topic is not only relevant for any company that aspires to be competitive, but it is also a matter of human dignity for those of us who spend a large part of our lives in a work environment. So hold on, because we're going to delve into how to transform an ordinary workplace into a space where health and performance take center stage.

What is Physical Health Promotion at Work?

When we talk about physical health promotion at work, we're referring to initiatives designed to improve the physical well-being of employees through physical activity programs, ergonomics improvements, incentives to maintain an active lifestyle and more. And no, it's not just a luxury or a goodwill gesture by companies. It's a thoughtful strategy that improves productivity, reduces absenteeism and boosts team motivation. Ah, and it also saves companies money!

In essence, it's a mix of three ingredients:

  1. Interventions at the organizational level: Such as flexible policies that encourage movement or the incorporation of on-site gyms.
  2. Active participation of employees: Because health cannot be imposed, it must be cultivated.
  3. Education and constant training: So that people understand the "why" and "how" of these actions.

My Experience: From Sedentary to a Healthy Environment

I'll tell you something personal. Years ago I worked in an office where spending 10+ hours a day in front of the computer was the norm. Over time, I began to notice problems such as chronic fatigue, muscle aches and productivity going downhill. Everything changed when my company decided to implement an occupational health program. They started with small changes: yoga classes, nutrition workshops and even weekly step challenges. The change in my physical health was monumental, and as a side effect, my motivation and energy went through the roof.

This experience taught me something key: a work environment that promotes physical health is an environment where people want to stay and do their best.

Benefits of Promoting Physical Health at Work

For employees:

    • Lower risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes or hypertension.
    • Reduction of stress and better emotional management.
    • More energy and better physical fitness, which translates into greater personal satisfaction.

    For companies:

      • Savings in medical costs: Because healthy workers mean less sick leave.
      • Improved productivity: An active person is a more alert and focused person.
      • Improved corporate image: Companies that take care of their people attract top talent.

Obstacles and How to Overcome Them

Promoting physical health at work is not without its challenges:

        • Lack of interest or time: Many employees may feel too busy to participate. The solution: incentives and simple activities such as active breaks.
        • Limited budgets: No need to spend a fortune. Programs like discounts at local gyms or step-tracking apps are affordable and effective.
        • Resistance to change: Involving employees in program design can remove this barrier. Let them take the lead!

        Innovative Strategies That Work

If there's one thing I've learned, it's that successful programs share certain characteristics. Here are some ideas that, according to experts and my personal experience, make a difference:

        • Use of technology: Mobile apps and smartwatches to track physical activity and set personal goals.
        • Hour flexibility: Allowing time for physical activities during the workday can be a revolutionary change.
        • Incorporating healthy habits into the organizational culture: From standing meetings to healthy snacks in the office.
        • Psychological support: Mental and physical health go hand in hand. Mindfulness and coaching can perfectly complement physical activities.

        Success Stories

Companies such as Google and Apple have shown that investing in the well-being of their employees not only improves the work climate, but also financial results. In Spain, initiatives such as the NAOS Strategy have boosted physical activity in workplaces, with encouraging results in terms of decreasing sedentary lifestyles.

        What You Can Do Today

If you are an employee, start by proposing small changes, such as a midday walking group. If you're an employer, think about implementing policies that promote health without being invasive. A small step can lead to a big change.

And remember: a healthy company starts with healthy people.
