I am Carlos Hidalgo, and I want to talk to you about something I am passionate about because I have experienced it firsthand and have seen its positive impact: the promotion of physical health at work. This topic is not only relevant for any company that aspires to be competitive, but it is also a matter of human dignity for those of us who spend a large part of our lives in a work environment. So hold on, because we're going to delve into how to transform an ordinary workplace into a space where health and performance take center stage.
When we talk about physical health promotion at work, we're referring to initiatives designed to improve the physical well-being of employees through physical activity programs, ergonomics improvements, incentives to maintain an active lifestyle and more. And no, it's not just a luxury or a goodwill gesture by companies. It's a thoughtful strategy that improves productivity, reduces absenteeism and boosts team motivation. Ah, and it also saves companies money!
In essence, it's a mix of three ingredients:
I'll tell you something personal. Years ago I worked in an office where spending 10+ hours a day in front of the computer was the norm. Over time, I began to notice problems such as chronic fatigue, muscle aches and productivity going downhill. Everything changed when my company decided to implement an occupational health program. They started with small changes: yoga classes, nutrition workshops and even weekly step challenges. The change in my physical health was monumental, and as a side effect, my motivation and energy went through the roof.
This experience taught me something key: a work environment that promotes physical health is an environment where people want to stay and do their best.
For employees:
For companies:
Promoting physical health at work is not without its challenges:
If there's one thing I've learned, it's that successful programs share certain characteristics. Here are some ideas that, according to experts and my personal experience, make a difference:
Companies such as Google and Apple have shown that investing in the well-being of their employees not only improves the work climate, but also financial results. In Spain, initiatives such as the NAOS Strategy have boosted physical activity in workplaces, with encouraging results in terms of decreasing sedentary lifestyles.
If you are an employee, start by proposing small changes, such as a midday walking group. If you're an employer, think about implementing policies that promote health without being invasive. A small step can lead to a big change.
And remember: a healthy company starts with healthy people.
