When I think of Vocational Training (VET), I can't help but smile and remember how many times it has gotten me out of trouble and opened doors I didn't even know existed. VET is not only an alternative to university, it is a direct path to employability, and I say this with full knowledge of the facts.
For those who are not very familiar, Vocational Training is a set of educational programs that prepare students to exercise a specific profession. Its objective is clear: provide practical and theoretical skills directly applicable to the labor market. What many do not know is that Spain has worked hard to update this system, which has evolved considerably since its origins in the 1970s.
In its first version, VET was viewed with some contempt. It focused more on training than on professional training, and companies were not sufficiently cooperative. However, that changed in the 1990s with the LOGSE educational reform, which brought VET closer to the real needs of the market.
As a young man, I was a student who didn't see the purpose of endless theoretical classes. I decided to try my luck in a Vocational Training program, and what a difference! They taught me things I could apply instantly. From welding to mechanical design, every class gave me useful tools for the real world. Not only did I learn how to do something, I learned how to work.
Within a couple of years, I was already at a local engineering firm, working side-by-side with professionals who valued my technical knowledge. And here's the kicker: many of my university classmates didn't find jobs until after graduation, while I was already gaining work experience. Bingo!
I'll tell you one thing: VET is practical, direct and useful. If you are tired of so much theory and endless books, this is your way out. Here are some clear advantages I've seen over the years:
But beware, not everything is a bed of roses. Throughout my life, I have seen how VET has had to fight against some stigmas. There is still the idea that VET is for those who do not "make the grade" at university, which could not be further from the truth.
What I find curious is that, in many European countries, VET is even more prestigious than a university degree, especially in technical sectors. In Spain, we are beginning to realize its true value, but there is still a long way to go.
Today, VET covers a wide variety of fields, such as:
Each of these areas offers specialized training, and in many cases, the option to continue training with additional courses or go on to university if you wish.
One of the most significant improvements I have seen in recent years is the creation of Integrated Vocational Training Centers (CIFP). These centers not only teach basic, middle and higher vocational training, but also collaborate directly with companies to improve the employability of students.
In my experience, the CIFP are places where you really breathe innovation. Did you know that many of these centers participate in innovation projects with local companies? It's a win-win: students learn cutting-edge technologies and companies get skilled employees.
In addition to formal FP, there is Vocational Training for Employment (FPE). This type of training is mainly aimed at working or unemployed workers, and its objective is to improve employability. Here it was my turn to return to the classroom after a few years in the labor market. Why? Because technology changes and, if you don't keep up to date, you get left behind.
Thanks to an FPE course, I managed to get up to speed with new computer-aided design technologies. These types of courses are a great opportunity to recycle or learn new skills without having to go back to formal education.
VET continues to evolve. Today, we are seeing a trend toward digitalization and automation, which means that the areas of information technology and electronics will continue to boom. If you are thinking about studying VET, I encourage you to consider sectors with high employability.
If I have learned anything from my experience with Vocational Training, it is that it is a training pathway that opens doors to solid and rewarding careers. No matter what your interest, VET has something for you. Forget the stigmas, invest in the practical and functional. I guarantee it will be one of the best decisions you can make.
The faculties embrace diverse academic disciplines and fields of study, opening doors to new perspectives and exploring different spheres of wisdom in a constantly evolving world.
