Vocational Training and Orientation (FOL): The key to open your professional path.

Vocational Training and Orientation (FOL): The key to open your professional path.

Hello, I want to tell you how Formation and Work Orientation (FOL) has become a fundamental pillar in my career and how it can be in yours. I wasn't always aware of its importance, but after living the reality of work for years, I assure you that FOL is that secret tool that everyone should handle.

When I was 18, like any young person, I thought the most important thing was to jump right into the working world without stopping too much to think about things like contracts, salaries or working conditions.Wrong! Soon enough, reality hit me. Not knowing how to interpret a payroll or not knowing my rights as a worker got me into more than one mess. It was then that I discovered how essential job training and orientation is to avoid falling into traps and assert my rights.

What is Job Training and Orientation (FOL)?

FOL is not just another subject within the Vocational Training training cycles, as some may think. It is the basis that allows you to move in the world of work safely and without being seen as a novice. It's a body of knowledge ranging from employment contracts, risk prevention, to how to negotiate a good salary or what to do if you become unemployed.

If you're wondering what this is good for you on a day-to-day basis, let me make it clear: knowing these details helps you not depend on others to handle your labor issues, whether it's a payroll you don't understand, a contract you're proposed or how to proceed if you get fired. The autonomy that FOL gives you is pure gold.

My first encounters with FOL: the beginning of a long relationship

I remember my first job. I had no idea how contracts worked, and the result was that I signed something I didn't even read. Big mistake. They paid me less than what I was entitled to, but it wasn't until, by chance, I attended a Training and Job Orientation course, that I realized I had been naïve. They were taking money from me! Thanks to what I learned there, I was able to talk to my boss and correct the situation. Since that day, I haven't stopped applying what I learned in every job I've had.

What does Job Training and Orientation include?

You may ask: "Pablo, what exactly do you learn in FOL?" Let me sum it up:

Labor Contracts: Not only will you learn to distinguish between a temporary and an indefinite contract, but you'll also understand what rights and obligations you have in each. This is where I made my first mistakes.

Salaries and payrolls: Knowing how to read a payroll is not an easy task, but it is indispensable. Be careful what you sign! I have seen more than one who accepted a salary without seeing the hidden deductions.

Social Security and Unemployment: One of the biggest scares of my life was when I became unemployed for the first time. I didn't know what to do, or who to turn to. If I had known what I know today about unemployment benefits, I would have slept a lot easier.

Occupational risk prevention: Have you heard that "prevention is better than cure"? Well, it is the essence of occupational risk prevention. Working in a safe environment is not only a right, but an obligation for companies. But watch out! If you don't know how to protect yourself or what to do in case of an accident, who will do it for you?

Active job search: FOL not only teaches you how to survive in a job, it also helps you find one. Today, social networks, online job boards and platforms like LinkedIn are your best allies to build a solid career.

My evolution with FOL: from novice to professional

After that first experience, I decided it was time to train myself better and take the reins of my career. I participated in more FOL modules and, little by little, I became more confident in what I was doing and saying. I understood that vocational training is not only about learning a trade, but about knowing how to move in the work environment, knowing the rules of the game, and most importantly, asserting your rights without fear.

For example, when I started working in a more technical sector, such as industrial maintenance, things got more serious. Here, workplace risk prevention became fundamental. If I hadn't known how to manage risks in such a dangerous environment, I could have gotten myself into very compromising situations. FOL saved me!

Why is FOL key to future employment?

Now, with years of experience behind me, I can tell you that without job training and orientation, you are at a disadvantage. Not only in contract and payroll issues, but in how to develop your career, how to face interviews or how to move within the labor market. With FOL, you are no longer the worker who just executes orders, you are a professional who knows how the working world works.

Also, in a context where labor regulations are constantly changing, having a solid foundation allows you to adapt to those changes and not be left behind. If you've ever heard the saying "he who doesn't know, loses," it applies perfectly here.

The impact of FOL in the modern company

I've had the opportunity to work in companies that highly value FOL, and it's no coincidence. These companies understand that workers trained in these subjects are more autonomous, make better decisions and, above all, avoid labor conflicts. And of course, an employee who knows his or her rights is an employee who will not let himself or herself be trampled on.

In short, FOL is much more than just a subject or course. It is a power tool, a way to protect yourself and make sure you are treated fairly. Whether you're just starting out or have years of experience, it's never too late to delve into these topics. Believe me, in the working world, knowledge is power, and FOL provides you with it.
