Types of Facial Protection in the Health Care Setting: A Perspective from Experience

Hello! I'm Rubén Águila, and throughout my career in healthcare I have had the opportunity to use various types of face protection. This equipment is essential to ensure our safety and that of our patients. Join me on this tour where I will tell you, from my experience, what types of face protection exist in the healthcare area, their importance and how they have evolved over time.

The Importance of Face Protection in the Healthcare Environment

Working in the healthcare sector involves being exposed to multiple risks: from splashes of biological fluids to inhalation of harmful particles. Face protection acts as an essential barrier to prevent infection and injury. According to the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (INSST), eye and face protection is crucial to avoid damage from impact, liquid splashes and optical radiation.

Types of Face Protection in Healthcare

Throughout my career, I have used a variety of face protection equipment. Here are the most common:

1. Surgical Masks

These are the most commonly used in hospital environments. Designed to protect against fluid splashes and large particles, but do not offer complete protection against airborne particles. Their use is essential during surgical procedures and in situations where a basic barrier is required.

2. N95 Respirators

These respirators offer a higher level of protection by filtering at least 95% of airborne particles, including pathogens. They are indispensable in procedures that generate aerosols or in situations with a high risk of airborne transmission. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), N95 respirators are recommended in high-risk procedures.

3. Face shields

Face shields cover the entire face, offering protection against splashing fluids and flying particles. However, they are generally used in conjunction with other protective equipment, such as face masks, as they do not provide complete protection on their own.

4. Goggles

Designed to protect the eyes from splashes and particles. They are especially useful in procedures where there is a risk of exposure to body fluids or chemicals. INSST stresses the importance of protective eyewear to prevent eye damage.

My Personal Experience with Face Shield

I remember an occasion when, during an emergency procedure, an unexpected splash impacted directly on my face shield. Thanks to it, I avoided potential exposure to pathogens. This incident reinforced in me the importance of always wearing the proper protective equipment.

The Evolution of Face Shielding

With the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, face shielding took on unprecedented relevance. Equipment shortages led to rapid innovation and production of face shields. For example, at NewYork-Presbyterian, physicians and engineers teamed up to produce low-cost, rapidly manufactured face shields.

Considerations When Choosing Face Protection

When selecting the right face protection equipment, it is critical to consider:

The Type of Hazard: Not all equipment offers the same protection. It is essential to identify the specific risk in order to choose the right equipment.

Comfort and fit: Uncomfortable equipment can lead to improper use. It is vital that the equipment fits well and is comfortable for prolonged use.

Regulations and standards: Ensuring that equipment complies with current regulations ensures its effectiveness.

Conclusion

Face protection in healthcare is essential to ensure the safety of both professionals and patients. Throughout my career, I have learned that investing in good protective equipment not only prevents risks, but also provides the peace of mind needed to perform our duties with confidence.
