Nutrition, there's a powerful keyword for you! One of those words that seems to ring everywhere these days. But... do we really know what it means? As someone who has had to learn it, live it and teach it to others, I will tell you that nutrition is the key to life and health. And mind you, I'm not talking to you as just any manual, but as someone who has walked this learning path for years. Throughout this article, I will take you by the hand through everything you need to know.
Nutrition is the biological process through which our body obtains and uses nutrients to stay healthy, grow and function properly. These nutrients come from the foods and beverages we consume and are absorbed and metabolized by our body to generate energy and maintain our vital functions in good condition. In short, it is what fuels your body to perform at its best and live in a healthy way.
Generally speaking, there are two main types of nutrition:
Human nutrition is obviously heterotrophic. We are nourished by foods that already contain all those compounds that our body needs to carry out its functions. Over the years I have learned that good nutrition goes far beyond simply eating to satisfy hunger.
To better understand nutrition, let's talk about nutrients, the real protagonists of this story:
Good nutrition not only allows us to perform our daily activities, but also strengthens the immune system, improves mental and physical performance, and helps us prevent disease. When nutrition is adequate, we improve our quality of life and avoid serious complications such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension and even some types of cancer.
Over the years I have learned that there are no magic formulas, but there are essential guidelines: eat balanced, varied and in adequate portions. In addition, there are certain conditions such as stress and lack of sleep that affect how our body uses the nutrients we give it, and therefore, our health also depends on other healthy habits and lifestyles.
The nutritional pyramid is a visual tool that guides us on the proportion of food we should consume. Imagine a pyramid divided into sections; each level represents a food group with its recommended frequency:
A poor diet can have serious consequences, such as malnutrition, which refers to imbalances between what the body needs and what it actually receives. This mismatch can lead to short- and long-term health problems. Some of the most common conditions associated with inadequate nutrition include:
Nutrition is a science and an art that we must take seriously, but without complicating our lives. Listen to your body, eat varied, fresh and in adequate portions. There is no universal recipe, but what does exist is knowledge and respect for the foods that provide us with the necessary nutrients. With every meal, remember that you are investing in your health, in your dreams, in your energy for the day to day. Do not underestimate it!
