Educa UNIVERSITY|ART AND ARCHITECTURE
If you've ever been told that Seville is just flamenco, bulls and tiles, let me break that myth. Here's something so current and groundbreaking that, like me, you'll end up losing track of time within its walls: the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo (CAAC).
I've visited this place more times than my step counter can remember. And today I want to tell you why this place is not just another museum, but an experience that will make you see art with different eyes.
The CAAC is not just a place where modern paintings or sculptures are exhibited. It is a space that beats with the energy of the contemporary and the experimental. Its headquarters, the Monasterio de la Cartuja de Santa María de las Cuevas, could not be more symbolic: a place that fuses centuries of history with the current artistic avant-garde.
Originally created in 1990 to promote and conserve contemporary art, this center began to assemble its permanent collection in the following years. In 1997, it moved to the Monastery, an architectural jewel of Seville, whose history includes everything from being a Carthusian monastery to a Napoleonic barracks and a ceramics factory. Impacting, isn't it? This already tells you that "fusing the old with the modern" is not just a slogan here.
Here's a fact to blow your mind: Christopher Columbus' remains were buried in this monastery for decades. But that's just a hint of the peculiar past of this place. Today, in the monastery's halls and courtyards, you can find works by renowned artists such as Louise Bourgeois, Francis Bacon, and Chema Cobo.
And the best part: it's all set up in such an ingenious way that it doesn't feel like a traditional museum. It's more like entering an alternative universe where ideas come to life.
Let me be blunt: the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo is a magnet for inquiring minds. Not only do they have permanent and temporary exhibitions that address social, cultural and political issues, but also a packed agenda of activities: from workshops and concerts to film series and seminars. Everything, designed to make you question the world around you.
The vibe of the place is so particular that even a simple stroll through the gardens already tells you a lot. Why? Because these gardens were designed at the 1992 Universal Exposition in Seville. Imagine walking among centuries-old trees while you see an ultramodern sculpture. It's pure visual poetry.
I'm going to be honest with you. The first time I went to the CAAC was more out of curiosity than interest in contemporary art. I thought, "A couple of rare paintings and that's it." But what I found blew my mind.
There was an installation that filled an entire room with mirrors and flashing lights. At first, I didn't understand anything, but as I left I realized something important: art isn't always there to be understood; sometimes it's just there to be felt.
From that moment on, the CAAC became one of my favorite corners of Seville. Whether you visit with friends, as a couple or alone, this place always has something to offer.
The location: The Cartuja Monastery is just a stone's throw from the center of Seville, on the Isla de la Cartuja. A perfect plan to combine with a stroll through the city.
The collection: From historical pieces from the mid-twentieth century to the most experimental of current artists. You won't get bored here.
The price: For just a few euros, you can tour the entire museum or focus on the temporary exhibitions. Plus, on certain days, admission is free. (Who doesn't like a good, nice and cheap plan?)
The experience: Beyond the art, the simple fact of touring a space so steeped in history will make you feel like you're part of something bigger.
If you are looking for a place that challenges your preconceived ideas about art and culture, the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo is for you. I, Amadeo Perez, tell you from my own experience: every visit is different, every work tells you a different story.
So put on your most comfortable shoes, grab your camera (because, believe me, you'll want photos of every corner) and get ready for an experience you won't find anywhere else.
The faculties embrace diverse academic disciplines and fields of study, opening doors to new perspectives and exploring different spheres of wisdom in a constantly evolving world.
