Educa UNIVERSITY|ART AND ARCHITECTURE
Hello, I'm Carlos Hidalgo, and today I want to tell you about something that marked my life: the Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid (CBA). As a lover of art and culture, this place is not only a beautiful building in the heart of Madrid; it is a refuge, a cultural epicenter and a meeting point where the past and the future converse. Here I tell you about my experience, my learnings and why this place should be on your must-see list if you visit the Spanish capital.
The Círculo de Bellas Artes, founded in 1880, is not just any cultural center. From its headquarters at Calle Alcalá, 42, it stands as one of the most important institutions in Europe. Why? Because culture is lived and breathed here. Fine arts, literature, science, philosophy, film, theater, music... everything converges in one place. And guess what?I've been lucky enough to enjoy it in all its forms.
This multidisciplinary center is more than exhibitions and activities. It represents a vision that combines tradition with innovation. As its current motto, "Cultura Contigo," says, it is about sharing and reflecting together on the great challenges of our time.
I can't talk about the CBA without mentioning its history. It all began on Barquillo Street, where a group of artists came together to promote culture. Over time, illustrious names such as Picasso, Valle-Inclán and Jacinto Benavente walked its corridors. Most impressive is that this institution has survived crises and changes, moving up to 10 times before settling in its iconic current home.
When you enter the building, designed by Antonio Palacios, you encounter monumental architecture that reflects the eclectic spirit of its time. No matter how many times I visit, I always discover some new detail.
On my last visit, I stumbled upon works by Picasso and Francis Bacon. Did you know that it houses over 1200 pieces of art between painting, sculpture and ceramics? What I love is how the CBA mixes established artists with emerging talents. There's always something new to discover.
To go up to the azotea of the CBA is, literally, to rise above Madrid. From there, the views take your breath away: from the Sierra de Guadarrama to the Cerro de los Angeles. In addition, the statue of Minerva, goddess of wisdom and the arts, crowns this unique viewpoint.
Here I have enjoyed conferences with brilliant minds like Umberto Eco and concerts that mix the classical with the contemporary. Their programming ranges from poetry and film to philosophical debates and science.
If you're looking for a more relaxed experience, the terrace restaurant is ideal. Mind you, be prepared to pay, because the views come at a price. But trust me, it's worth every penny.
I remember a special day when I attended a creative writing workshop at the CBA. It was a transformative moment: I found myself surrounded by people who shared my passion, in an environment that breathed inspiration. In that instant I understood the true value of this place: it's not just a physical space, but a catalyst for ideas and emotions.
The Círculo de Bellas Artes is not just a place for artists; it's for everyone. Whether you're interested in art, philosophy, or just want to enjoy a breathtaking view of Madrid, you'll find something here that speaks to your soul. And I'm telling you, I've experienced firsthand how this place can change you.
If you're looking for a dose of culture, inspiration, or just a different plan in Madrid, the CBA is your destination.
