Welcome to a cinematographic journey! Because to talk about cinema is to talk about the seventh art in its maximum expression. It is no coincidence that we give it a special place among the arts, along with painting, sculpture, music, or literature. And the fact is that cinema is a mixture of all of them, a visual and sound art that tells us stories, transmits emotions, and takes us to worlds where, for a while, we forget the routine.
Join me to know what makes cinema more than entertainment; we will delve into its history, its cultural impact and how it has evolved in recent decades. I speak from experience, because, after years of immersing myself in all kinds of productions, I can say that cinema is one of the few things that manages to cross cultural barriers and unite us all, no matter who we are or where we come from.
The phrase seventh art was coined in 1911 by the critic and theorist Ricciotto Canudo, who recognized cinema as a new art form, integrating visual, sound, and narrative elements. Since then, cinema has evolved in technique, narrative and technology, becoming one of the most influential means of communication. Unlike other artistic expressions, cinema has the unique ability to combine movement, music and voice, creating a complete and immersive experience.
To understand the origin of the seventh art, it is impossible not to mention the Lumière brothers, pioneers of cinema. In 1895, they presented to the world their "animated views", leaving everyone amazed with the possibility of seeing moving images. Although at first they were simple scenes of everyday life, soon the power of cinema to tell stories was discovered, and figures like Georges Méliès began to explore magic and special effects, creating films that captured the imagination.
Since then, cinema has gone through many stages: the mute cinema, where everything depended on performances and visual expressions; then, sound cinema, which allowed combining dialogue and music. And throughout the 20th century, the seventh art diversified into multiple genres, each with its own style, audience, and purpose. Today we have everything from comedies and thrillers, to auteur cinema, blockbusters and, of course, independent cinema.
The cinema is defined by a number of elements that, combined, create a powerful impact:
Let's be clear, cinema is not just entertainment; it is a reflection of society. From the beginning, it has been a powerful tool for communicating ideas, and many filmmakers have used it to launch political, social and cultural messages. Think of films like The Birth of a Nation, which, despite its controversy, revolutionized the way cinema is made, or Stanley Kubrick's filmography, which always invites you to question reality.
Cinema creates a universal language, and I've seen it firsthand: it doesn't matter if you watch a film in another language or with a completely different culture; at some point, you connect with the story. Film also becomes a form of collective memory, recalling historical events, social problems and past eras.
And here comes the fun part. Who doesn't like a good comedy Or, on the other hand, a movie that makes your hair stand on end. There are genres for all tastes: from comedy and romance to horror, action or sci-fi. Each genre has its own set of norms and conventions, and in that variety lies the richness of cinema.
Did you know that genres can also be combined? There you have the psychological horror, which mixes suspense with a macabre touch, or the romantic comedy, where love and humor go hand in hand. The variety of genres in the seventh art is infinite, which guarantees that every viewer will find something that grabs them.
Technology advances, and with it, cinema. From special effects to virtual reality (VR), the seventh art continues to find new ways to reinvent itself. Will 3D cinema become the norm? Or will VR make it so that, instead of just watching a movie, we live it?
For me, the seventh art is more than just a screen; it is a way of understanding the world, a window that opens us to new ideas and reminds us that we all share a part of the same human story.
