What's so special about the National Museum of Roman Art in Mérida? That question I asked myself years ago, when I had not yet imagined that this place would change the way I understood the Roman world. Since then, every visit to the National Museum of Roman Art (MNAR) has been a fascinating journey to the heart of Augusta Emerita, the ancient Roman city we now call Mérida.
Here I will tell you, from my experience and a bit of research, why this museum is so special and how you can make the most of it if you decide to visit. Spoiler:Be prepared to fall in love with its architecture, its history and its 36,000 unique pieces.
The MNAR is much more than a museum. Founded in 1986 and inaugurated in an impressive building designed by architect Rafael Moneo, this space brings together the largest collection of art and archaeological remains of Roman Hispania. It is located in Mérida, a city declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1993, thanks to its archaeological ensemble.
The museum not only preserves objects from ancient Augusta Emerita, but tells stories of how the Romans lived, worked and worshipped. Its design, with late Roman-inspired arches and bricks, is a work of art in itself.
The first time I set foot in the MNAR I was barely 20 years old. I remember walking among the monumental galleries, flanked by brick walls that seemed to speak of centuries past. What impressed me most was the mosaic of Bacchus and Ariadne, one of the most outstanding pieces in the museum. Those colors, that intricacy... I swear I could almost hear the music of a Roman banquet.
The best part? Each floor of the museum is like a chapter in a book. From everyday life on the ground floor to the Christian and Visigothic collections on the upper levels, everything is designed to transport you through time.
The MNAR doesn't fall short when it comes to archaeological treasures. Here's a preview of what you can't miss:
In addition, the museum does not stay in the past. With temporary exhibitions and an exceptional educational program, there is always something new to learn.
It is impossible to talk about the MNAR without mentioning its creator, the architect Rafael Moneo. This building is much more than a container for art; it is a work in constant dialogue with history. Built with brick and concrete, it evokes Roman baths and theaters while fitting perfectly into the urban landscape of Mérida.
The natural light that enters through the arches and diaphragms brings the exhibits to life. And most impressive is how the building seems to emerge directly from the Roman remains, creating a visual connection between the ancient and the modern.
Visiting the National Museum of Roman Art is more than an educational experience; it is an emotional journey into the heart of our history. It doesn't matter if you're an archaeology lover or just curious about the past: this place has something for everyone.
I guarantee you'll leave the museum with a new appreciation for Spain's Roman heritage and, who knows, maybe you'll even find inspiration for your modern life
