Why choose Laterality in Children?

There are some things we take for granted, right? Like your son or daughter choosing which hand to write with or which foot to use to kick a ball. But did you know that this seemingly small detail is called laterality and is crucial to their physical, emotional and cognitive development? If you're here, you probably already suspect that something's not quite right. Relax, you're in the right place.

Lateralization in children is not a fashionable topic, nor a whim of neuroscience. It is the axis on which their ability to read, write, coordinate movements and, in short, manage in the world revolves. That is why, if there is any imbalance, it is vital to detect it and correct it in time. Because yes, it can be corrected. And the sooner you do it, the better.

What is laterality and why is it so important?

Laterality is, in simple terms, the preference we have for one side of the body. It's what makes us right-handed, left-handed or ambidextrous. But it's not just about choosing which hand we write with. Laterality affects our perception of space, balance and even the way we learn.

If your little one has difficulty distinguishing between left and right, if he inverts letters when writing or if he has trouble coordinating movements, he may have a problem with crossed or undefined laterality. And this can affect their academic performance, self-esteem and even their relationships with other children.

The most common problems related to laterality

  1. Cross laterality: when a child uses different sides of the body for different activities. For example, he/she writes with the right hand but shoots with the left foot.
  2. Undefined laterality: when there is no clear preference for one side of the body, which generates confusion and lack of coordination.
  3. Learning difficulties: laterality problems are closely linked to difficulties in reading, writing or concentrating.

Thus, it is not a matter of "waiting for it to go away."

  • Learning difficulties: learning difficulties: laterality problems are closely linked to difficulties in reading, writing or concentrating.
  • That is why it is not a matter of "waiting for it to go away". Detecting and working on these problems as soon as possible is key.

How do I know if my child has laterality problems?

First, observe. Children's behavior can tell you more than you realize:

    • Does he have trouble following directions, such as "go right"
    • Has trouble coordinating simple movements, such as throwing or catching a ball?
    • Writes with one hand, but uses the other foot to jump or kick?

If this sounds familiar, it's best to have an evaluation with a professional. Don't worry, because although this sounds alarming, it has a solution.

    The solution: exercises and patience

The good news? Laterality can be worked on, and with surprising results. Here are some simple exercises you can do with your child to improve his coordination and reinforce laterality:

      1. Cross exercises: ask him to touch his right hand to his left knee and vice versa. This helps connect both brain hemispheres.
      2. Visual tracking: have him follow a ball moving back and forth with his eyes. This improves spatial perception.
      3. Two-handed activities: such as painting with one hand and then the other. This helps define a natural preference.
      4. Sports and games: jumping rope, playing soccer or throwing a frisbee are great ways to work on coordination.

The key is to do it consistently, but without pressure. Children learn best by playing and feeling motivated.

What happens if laterality is not corrected?

Now, let's talk straight. Ignoring a laterality problem can have consequences that extend into adolescence and even adulthood.

      • Academic difficulties that affect their performance and confidence.
      • Problems integrating into group activities or sports.
      • More frustration when performing everyday tasks.

But don't panic, because if you're reading this, you've already taken the first step: information.

You're not alone: ask for help

Remember, you don't have to face this alone. Professionals in pedagogy, psychology and occupational therapy are there to guide you. A proper assessment can make all the difference. And yes, the solutions are closer than you think.

In short, laterality in children is much more than just a preference for using one hand or the other. It is a fundamental pillar for their development and learning. If you think your child has a problem in this aspect, act now. Because the sooner you start, the easier it will be to correct it.

And remember, sometimes the biggest problems have simpler solutions than we think. You just have to take the first step. So what are you waiting for? Your little one will thank you for it later.
