Did you know that there is a group of students who require additional educational support to reach their full potential? They are students with Specific Educational Support Needs, or SENSE. And if you're here, you're probably someone who wants to make a difference in their lives. I applaud that intention. Because this goes way beyond teaching reading or math problem solving. Here we're talking about offering life tools.
Identifying a student's specific needs is not a matter of luck. It is not something left to the teacher's intuition or to chance. Early detection is the first and most important step. Because when you understand what that student really needs, you can start making adjustments. I'm not just talking about adjusting content or schedules, I'm talking about adjusting the way you perceive education. It's finding those little details that make that student feel seen, valued, and supported at every step.
Here's what you need to make that screening process accurate and effective:
Structured observation: Observe the student in different contexts: in class, at recess, in group and individual activities. The key here is to take notes on each situation to build a real profile of their behavior and needs.
Diagnostic assessment: Specific assessments are not just about tests and questionnaires. They are tailored tools that allow you to delve deeper into cognitive, emotional and social areas.
Interviews and constant communication with families and colleagues: Feedback from parents and other teachers is vital. They have a different and key perspective to understand the whole picture.
After detecting the needs, the real work begins. Because it's not just about knowing, it's about intervening, adapting and implementing support strategies. And this is not a one-day job. Supporting a student ACNEAE is a long-term process. Big changes come from small actions repeated every day. This is where creativity comes into play. Because who said education has to be boring?
Personalized support: Each student is unique, and what works for one may not work for another. Intervention should be individualized, relying on strategies such as multilevel teaching or the use of visual and auditory reinforcement.
Specific curricular adjustments: This means adapting the content and pace to the level of each student, without losing sight of the educational objectives. A flexible curriculum can be the key for the SENAC student to make progress without feeling overwhelmed.
Adapted tools and resources: From technological resources, to visual and auditory materials, resources should be varied and accessible so that each student can be integrated into learning in the way that works best for them.
Positive reinforcement and focus on achievement: Recognizing every small accomplishment is essential. This not only raises the student's self-esteem, but also motivates him or her to keep going.
Constant teamwork: Teachers must work hand in hand with counselors, psychologists and, above all, with the family. The key is to maintain fluid and constant communication to adjust the intervention throughout the process.
We cannot talk about intervention without mentioning the importance of inclusion. Students with specific needs not only need to learn, they also need to feel part of the school community. Because a child who feels excluded is unlikely to want to learn. Inclusion goes beyond adapting content; it is opening the doors to an environment that accepts and encourages them.
This means that in the classroom not only the subjects are adapted, but also the environment and social activities. Inclusion is a philosophy that drives the entire education system to be more empathetic and, above all, more humane.
The effects of appropriate intervention go far beyond the classroom. It's not just about improving their grades, it's about building their confidence and developing their social skills. It's giving them tools to face the world. Because when a student feels valued, recognized and supported, their attitude towards learning and towards life changes radically.
We are not only helping them to pass their subjects, we are helping to build confident, empathetic and prepared adults to face the challenges of life.
Working with the ACNEAE student body is a task that requires commitment, patience and, above all, empathy. It is not easy, but the rewards are enormous. Each small advance, each achievement, is a shared triumph. If you are a teacher, a counselor, or simply someone interested in supporting these students, remember: they don't need favors, they need opportunities.
Every time you give them one of those opportunities, you are helping them write their own success story. Because they, too, have the right to experience learning as a positive, transformative experience. The question is: are you ready to be part of that change?
